July seminar focuses on worm farming, alternative agriculture Kentucky Enrichment Inc used the Cave City (Ky.) Convention Center for a comprehensive seminar on worm farming and alternative agriculture in July 2003 There was a wide range of topics presented or available for discussion.(See schedule below for details.) This was the most comprehensive vermiculture and farm diversity program put on that year in Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri or Arkansas. Growers and other interested parties from the Midwest attended both days of the seminar. We had a substantial response from potential attendees. The meeting hall seated about 1,000 with some additional room along the walls. A nominal fee of $25 per person was charged at the door each day to cover the cost of the meeting rooms, fees and travel of the speakers and administrative costs. We will work very hard to have vendor displays of the most important topics in the lobby. The two day seminar was divided as follows: Day 1
Worm farming, worm types, feeding, climate control, humidity, feed options, organic diversion programs, vermicomposting, Organic certification, castings production, castings marketing, and other topics.
A Kentucky Department of Agriculture representative explained what is needed in obtaining organic certification for castings.
Kelly Slocum, Jerry Guinn and Mary Appelholfconducted a roundtable discussion for the afternoon on the business of vermiculture.
Day 2
During this part of the seminar, the emphasis shifted to what can be done with the assets and skills obtained as a worm farmer if worms aren't in your future.
Alternative agriculture projects were discussed in detail which will take advantage of the buildings many of the farmers have as well as their skills and self-determination.
We will have presenters on most or all of the following topics:
